I don't mind The Jam, but prefer when Weller went in the soul direction, rather than this new wave beat combo version. Some good songwriting here - Entertainment is this generation's Waterloo Sunset - but to borrow the Taxman riff for a lyric as simple as Start! seems something of a missed opportunity. The fact that the Gallaghers seem to have borrowed so heavily from the more obvious aspects of this all is not the bands fault, but does taint it slightly for me.

This sounds like a proper album - a throwback to when side 1 and side 2 came together to create something that stacks up collectively. It's The Jam at their sharpest, with Weller starting to get edgy and wanting to break free of the band constraints. The songs are tight as fuck, cutting social commentary. We miss them but we wouldn't want them back.
