Effortlessly cool. Almost too easy. It felt fresh at the time, but now sounds rather stale following a set formula. The Strokes as a concept band were fun. But they put genuine FUCK YOU indie back by about a decade.

Probably the last indie guitar album that I can hum every note and sing every line to. I played this a lot at the time it came out. But it always felt like something is missing here. I couldn't say what, but maybe it just all feels a bit too knowing, a little too calculated. Perhaps there is a lack of soul. Maybe it's the lyrics: they sort of mean everything and nothing at the same time - New York City Cops for a start. What does it all mean? Does it mean anything at all? Or does it just sound good with that Indie Post-Punk riffing behind it? Who knows?
