This is okay, but it's no Birthday Party. Cave is playing a character here, and I guess your opinion of this album depends on whether you like or identify with that character, or not. Personally I can take or leave it. A collection of songs about people being murdered isn't really my thing. This is quite polished in terms of presentation, and that for me is where this falls down. Much as I love Blixa Bargeld, the all-star karaoke Dylan track at the end sums this album up for me. All style and no substance.

Only Nick Cave could get away with an album all about murdering women - although I doubt if he would walk away unscathed in 2025. The Kylie duet gets all the headlines. But it's the PJ Harvey collab that works best for me. Polly brings out the best baritone in Smiling Nick.
