Punchy and Coy. Fun early Beatles album with a lot of their own writing. Not much to add but this album goes quick and has decent songwriting while also showing their influences. They struggle a bit on the more American or swaggering styles like Roll Over Beethoven or Money, I think their other poppy songs suit them much better at this phase. Highlights: It Won't Be Long, All I've Got to Do, All My Loving, Til There Was You
This is the album where the Beatles start to realize their potential. The album isn’t a couple of singles surrounded by their amateur show material. It’s a little more thoughtful and is the beginning of the through line to the band that changes everything.
a really good album with a good blend of originals and covers, showing the Fab Four & their influences as they were in the early years, but I don’t know if I’d call it an essential Beatles record. Even among their early work, I personally prefer Please Please Me & A Hard Day’s Night. favs: It Won’t Be Long, You Really Got a Hold On Me, Don’t Bother Me, Roll Over Beethoven least favs: Little Girl, Hold Me Tight
