It takes a certain amount of chutzpah to name your debut album not just “Club Classics” but “Volume I” to boot. So, does it do what it says on the tin? The answer is kind of, if the club in question is one of those impossibly trendy London clubs of the 80’s, full of black leather sofas and chrome fittings, inhabited by uncannily beautiful people who spend their time checking each other out to see who is coolest, and (most importantly) not really listening to the music. This album does have its moments and it’s fine to put on as background music, but it’s just not very exciting. There are some very posh sounding bits of narration in places which sound like they’ve drafted in a minor royal or a BBC presenter to pronounce “dance” to rhyme with “trance” with elongated vowels. The highlight, apart from the best known hit “Back to Life” is probably “African Dance” which flirts with some Afrobeat rhythms. Jazzy-B-tastic!
