Out Of The Blue
Electric Light Orchestra

This is a fantastic album which is perhaps just a little too long. I don't believe any album needs to be over an hour. The album is split into 4 parts. Part 1 is good. Part 2 is hit and miss with Jungle being a highlight but a couple of songs could have been cut here. Part 3 is fantastic and is concluded with Mr. Blue Sky which is one of my favourite songs of all time. I did always wonder why the song sort of changes into something else for the last minute or so and now I realise it's because it's part of a larger concept. Part 4 starts with the second best song on the album, Sweet is the Night, but then goes into a 5 minute whale noise instrumental which feels like the music they play at the end of a musical when everyone is leaving. This is followed by Birmingham Blues which is good but sounds suspiciously like Rockin All Over the World (released a couple of years prior) to me. The album ends with Wild West Hero which is a good song but I don't think it works too well as the closer for an album with this scope. I think they could have moved Sweet is the Night to part 2 (cut Believe Me Now) and got rid of part 4 and it would have been both shorter and better overall as well as being able to end on Mr. Blue Sky which has a great outro. Despite the criticisms, I find it hard not to give this album a 5. You can feel the passion and genius that went into it. The production is fantastic and it just sounds good.
