What a messy subject for a record. And whilst Gaye puts every effort into it, escaping the obvious distress and turmoil created by the divorce makes this hard, in parts, to listen to. At the core, though, is soft and sweet funk and listening to Gaye build up the layers of vocals to harmonise with his own voice, there are few singers finer. And yet, not really an easy listen.
