This is an all-timer for me. I first heard it in the early 2000s. I was vaguely aware of Big Star, but hadn't really heard any of their music, so I ended up checking out their first three albums from the library (be thankful for streaming, kids). This was an immediate favorite. Where #1 Record clearly sounds like a product of the 70s, I this is super timeless. It doesn't sound like much else from it's time and if you told me it came out last week, I might not question it. It strikes a nice balance between experimentation and great songwriting. Too many highlights to choose, but "Thank You Friends", "Jesus Christ", "Stroke it Noel", and "Holocaust" are all pretty amazing. I think the "Femme Fatale" cover also eclipses the VU version. I love the French backing vocals courtesy of Chilton's girlfriend Lesa Aldridge (one half of the titular Sister Lovers -- Jody Stephens was dating her sister). 5 stars.
