Growing up in the 80's and 90's, my impression of ZZ Top was formed by hearing the radio edits of Eliminator/Afterburner-era songs on the radio. So when people described ZZ Top as a "great guitar band" I kind of always rolled my eyes. Then, I listened to their early catalog, and realized they really are a great guitar band. Is it anything crazy unique or special? No. But, it doesn't try to be anything it's not - just good, straight up southern rock and roll. And they are one of the better bands to do it.
