Jane's Addiction has always been one of those bands whose legacy sort of outweighs my actual enjoyment of their music. It's kind of easy to forget how much these guys shaped 90s alternative rock. They brought in a lot of the hard rock elements 80s alternative bands like R.E.M. and the Smiths deliberately avoided. They definitely walked so the big alt-rock bands of the 90s could run. That being said, I definitely don't think the songs are as great on this one. "Mountain Song" and "Jane Says" are both classics, but after that it gets a bit thin. There's some other relatively solid tunes, but also a few clunkers, which isn't great for a relatively short album. I think they'd get better on their second album. 3.5 stars.
