1001 Albums Summary

I've always liked Talking Heads' singles and I'm one of the people who believe that Stop Making Sense is one of the best concert films ever made, but here's a confession, I've never owned a Talking Heads album until recently when I got More Songs About Buildings and Food from a second hand shop. So to get an album with only one song on it that I knew (Psycho Killer) was almost like Talking Heads had released a new album. I enjoyed it, It was kind of familiar but different, with David Byrnes distinctive voice and Tina Weymouth's funky bass. It may be because I'm much more familiar with their singles or because it's their debut, but I felt like some of the songs sounded like demos, also some other interesting sounds in some songs, such as steel drums in the opening track, made it an interesting and enjoyable listen.

So, when Boston came up as my next album, More Than a Feeling popped into my head straight away, then I tried to think of any other Boston songs that I knew and came up completely blank. I have always dismissed them as soft rock, but after actually listening to the album I think they are more power pop (the heavy guitar riff just before chorus in More Than a Feeling should’ve aroused my suspicions) with soaring vocals, harmonies and some heavier guitars than I was expecting. The song Rock n Roll Band could’ve been a KISS song and Something About You sounds like one of my favourite power pop bands, Big Star. The production is amazing too. I enjoyed listening, but I probably wouldn’t listen to it again.
