Lust For Life by Iggy Pop
Dec 22 2021

I've never been much of a punk fan. I find a lot of it repetitive - musically, lyrically, thematically. I'm probably ignorant. Most of this record sounds like a good ol' R&R album. The Passenger is a really catchy tune. Iggy's singing is perhaps the weakest link, but it's filled with emotion and overall fun, groovy, catchy. Def can see Bowie's influence all over, as well as The Stones. Not bad at all. 8/10

Be by Common
Dec 23 2021

I'm already very familiar with Common circa late 90s through the aughts. Back in my college days I used to love conscious backpack rap. I saw many greats at the First Unitarian Church in Philly - Murs, Atmosphere, Aesop, Blackalicious, etc. IMO Like Water for Chocolate is Common's magnum opus. It's the perfect hip hop album. Be is still pretty good. The production is peak Kanye. GO! is so god damn infectious. Lyrically the album seems a little lighter in tone, more laid back. The middle section flounders, don't love Faithful > Testify > Love Is... The chorus in Testify is grating - aggressive, out of place and distracting from the story. Taking a live cut straight off Chappelle is classic, love it. Album finishes strong. 7.5/10

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Dec 24 2021

1001 is bringing the Christmas heat! Kendrick is easily the best rapper of our generation, although I'd argue the competition is pretty weak. GKMC is still my favorite, but this album is a masterpiece. King Kunta is a bop. Alright is infectious. How Much a Dollar Cost is reflective and beautiful. At times the album switches gears too fast and gives you whiplash. That said, Kendrick really branches out with more socio-political commentary and wide influences from classic soul to swing jazz. At times the absurdity gets in the way of the message, but I still think this is a bold and provocative statement from a rapper on top of his game. 9.5/10

There are two types of people - those that love Christmas music, and those who loathe to hear it. I fall into the latter camp. Love the holidays, hate the music. No thanks.
