Imperial Bedroom
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
vocals remind me of bowie. funky production, great bass. quite moody, noir music.
"man out of time" is fantastic.
"...and in every home" has some wonderful orchestral arrangement - smooth strings and powerful brass.

Khaled
interesting percussion with heavy drums that seem to have a hip-hop influence. there's even some record scratching on "el bab"?
great strings, many sharp stabbing runs and riffs. vocal melodies are good (especially second and final tracks) although blur together across the songs - perhaps exacerbated by language barrier.
first track is great, "el aadyene" is funky, sounds like a mix of classic parliament and third wave ska. skipped the "imagine" cover.
probably won't return for another listen: sits in an awkward position between being too familiar in it's western influence to be interesting from a world-music perspective, while the language barrier itself creates a disconnect that prevents it being simple "easy-listening" music.

Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Tortoise
experimental wallpaper music. smooth textures, nice driving rhythms and interesting digital sounds and glitchy effects. very psychedelic with unusual arrangements.
"glass museum" is heavy. great guitar and drums, cute bell tone.
"a survey" is dark, mysterious and foreboding. the chirping insect ambience adds a sense of exploration.
"the taut and the tame" sounds like stepping into an arena, ready for the boss fight. perfect accompaniment to the prior track (right down to the same guitar tones). the break and subsequent rhythm - plus unique distorted synth sounds - is great and feels like the soundtrack of a gritty street showdown.
the final song, "along the banks of rivers" is the darkest song on the project. incredibly ominous, a vague mood of weary apprehension. the sound of going to hell and back.

Aftermath
The Rolling Stones
it's the stones - what more can i say? vocals go from playful to calming, incredibly solid guitar played in interesting ways. lots of awesome harmonica! great song structures and writing in general. very warm sounds, obviously a sense of nostalgia stemming from how timeless and iconic this band's sound is.
"lady jane" is beautiful and i love the harpsichord.
"under my thumb" has a great lead melody and a driving rhythm that immediately causes foot-tapping.
"out of time" is great. the vocals are great and the harmonies make me smile. cute bell sound and great bassline. fun rolling drums and off-beat guitar, a really nice song.
really consistent and easy to listen to - to the point where some songs blur together, although perhaps with repeated listens they might start to stand apart. first impressions led to no immediate stand-out songs.

Drive Like Jehu
very heavy. good distorted guitars, raw vocals. solid bass that grounds otherwise chaotic arrangements - reminds me of duff mckagan.
very noisy and grating, i am sure it would really appeal to someone who enjoys that sorta stuff.
made me want to listen to appetite for destruction (which i immediately did after finishing this project)
