More like a performance art piece. Sort of reminiscent of Brecht.
Addendum - it turns out that the music on this album were all written by Hanns Eisler, who worked with Bertolt Brecht, so it was a reasonable reaction.
It got better when I stopped actively listening to it and it was more background to me reading.
