I saw Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service last night and for their final song both bands came out and played a cover of Enjoy the Silence so this is a surprising but fitting pick. Some thoughts: 1) Drums were invented to sound like this 2) The genre is described as new wave/synth pop, and that is technically correct, but what it really is, in its soul, is music for weird sad people (me) to listen to in their basements or in clubs before sulking off somewhere else. Every generation gets one. 3) The Smiths if their drums were for fucking gladiators. 4) Probably could have done without three instrumental tracks in a row to close the album 5) This, to me, represents people truly internalizing that synths and drum machines are actual instruments rather than whatever was going on in songs like Simply Irresistible
