Garbage. Stupid sloppy drums and out of tune guitar with stupid fuzz effects and limp wristed playing attempt to give this album a laid-back, casual and authentic vibe but it just doesn't work. Lyrics are cringe and all the songs sound the same. A lot of the songs are just a simple vamp.
My favorite part of this album was the sound design. There are a lot of really juicy and rich synth parts which are a joy to hear, on a par with those of Daft Punk. The first track is kind of the odd one out and is very reminiscent of Kraftwerk. The rest seems to have more influence from the David Bowie/Brian Eno Berlin era. I can't comment much on the songwriting as it is rather minimal and dancy. I have never been the biggest fan of LCD Soundsystems vocals but revisiting them this time I found them more tolerable, especially noticing the clear Bowie influence.
Cliche and saccharine songwriting. Somewhat interesting and varied production that occasionally leans too heavily into reheated new wave. Vocal performances are a bit mediocre. Nothing here to really make me interested in checking out any more of their discography.
The Stones have always been one of those background bands for me. Not particularly offensive to me but I've also never had any inclination to take them very seriously either. Listening to this album clarifies why that's the case for me. I can stand it in small doses but after more than two songs I just find the bluesy rock stuff grating and one dimensional.
Maybe the first truly great Beatles album? With this album the Beatles moved from being a remarkable pop band to a visionary, envelope-pushing band. There's far too much to say about how much ground is broken in this album. The quality of the songwriting and recording is a huge step from early Beatles recordings. The album is varied yet cohesive. It has both great pop hits and more profound songs. This album sets up a remarkable streak of innovative releases from the band.
Admittedly this style of record isn't one that's in my wheelhouse, but it seems like a solid effort, perhaps one that could be tighter with more selective track picks. This was difficult to really give a fair shake in 24hrs since it's so long. There seems to be a decent amount of variety and a lot of interesting features. It sounds like a playful and upbeat record, with a split personality.
I really love shoegaze so how can I not give this album a 5? I still haven't heard a band that really does what MBV does. This is a lot more lofi and raw than Loveless but the songs and energy are just as vital.
Solid if not particularly special to me
Sounds very much like a product of its time.
