1001 Albums Summary

Timelessly, tragically relevant over 50 years later.

Particular tracks stand out very strong, however the album as a whole loses me frequently, and the second half all begins to sound the same.

There are some great tracks on here, and a very interesting dual nature, but it becomes too bloated with weaker sections for cover to cover listening.

A couple of standout tracks bump this up, otherwise the album sits a comfortable "pretty alright vibe" throughout.

On my first listen it failed to grab me. After reading up on the intent and influences and giving it a second listen I can appreciate what they were going for, but feel it doesn't live up to that.

Every track is fantastic. 'Do It Again' sets a strong tone, and the rest of the album keeps up the energy.

How deeply influential Aretha Franklin has been in the 50 years since this album has done a disservice to it for a first time listen. While certain tracks are incredibly strong, as an album experience the rest is repetitive and lackluster, due in no small part to every failed attempt at a copycat that's come since.

Powerful and energetic, takes a hold of you and doesn't let go.
