1001 Albums Summary

The key changes and vocal production *chefs kiss* Hadn’t heard the non-singles before. 6.5/10, slightly better than ‘meh’, there’s better disco out there.

Texturally wonderful. And many of these songs meant a lot to me as a teenager. First time listening to the whole album, 3 or 4 new tracks to my ears. It paints a snapshot of down-and-out-bon-vivant whiteys who probably read euro literature and explored drugs in New York in the late 60s. Which is easy to roll your eyes at now, but it’s a rather special and important work. I always thought this was a late, late 70s album, so learning it’s from the 60’s changes my perspective on the cultural significant of the work quite a lot - makes it more honest; more Influential than Influenced. I don’t love Lou or Nico’s voices very much, and I hate Andy Warhol’s whole schtick. 7.5/10 for the texture, and it’s important historical place.

Boring

I’ve never listened to this album in full but I know it has some lovely, well written songs. Epic sounds. I ran out of time to listen to it properly. Hopefully, I’ll get to it over the weekend and rewrite this if I can.

Not a huge fan of this album butttt I didn’t give it a careful listen. It’s a bit too egotistical for me.

What a legend. One of the strongest and most flavourful raw voices of that era, certainly for women. Her softer moments are soulful, too. Lyrics are great, written for women, which is a big plus perhaps especially in the genre. Her image is iconic, progressive and important. Truthful and bold. The band and musicality is ‘fine’, which is probably what stops it from being a five star album. Strong 8 though!
