Young Americans by David Bowie
Jan 05 2024

I found it overall to be quite enjoyable but to me it was a bit too flat. Felt like there wasn't that driving force that an album should have, like a bunch of chilled out tracks. Which I understand because of the music coming out at the time. I really liked the track "Fascination" it has a nice repeating refrain, very catchy. I didn't love Bowie's rendition of "Across the Universe", despite my Dad singing its praises - it just felt a bit forced to me whereas the Lennon version flows very nicely like a poem. Title track is kind of just okay. I also liked "Can you hear me", it was nice and a pretty way to close the album off. I would rate it a 6.5/10

Didn't love it, found the song structure repetitive and pretty boring as well as the uninventive melodies. The lyrics were interesting enough i guess I just don't enjoy the metre in which he delivers them - its very samey and rambley. Maybe another one of his albums will tell me why everyone loves him so much and calls him a songwriting genius...

On The Beach by Neil Young
Jan 08 2024

I really enjoyed the instrumentation used on this record its very mellow and minimalistic but works well with the whole tracklist to make a cohesive project. The mellotron style instrument on "See the Sky About to Rain" is really nice. The guitar tones are gorgeous I really enjoy a good jangly rhythm guitar riff like on "Revolution Blues". On the Beach is absolutely beautiful the vocals and chords are Marvin Gaye-esque and it works so well with his rough voice. Its a highlight on a brilliant album. That chord change to a 7th (i think) - I'm obsessed with it, the lyrics are melancholy and also sparsely strewn out to let the song breathe. Motion Picture is nice and then Ambulance Blues is nicer (vocab needs work) but again the instrumentation is brilliant the tone of everything is perfect especially the bass and guitar. So overall its a 9/10 for me.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips
Jan 09 2024

“Fight Test” was an okay opener and sets a kind of laid back mood and obviously the theme of the album loosely being a fight with robots. One More Robot is smooth and chill but I think the vocals hinder the tracks quality - they just aren't very special. However the latter half of the song is saved by the string section which I guess is "Sympathy 3000-21" its very pretty and I'm a sucker for anything beautiful and profound. YBWTPR pt.1 is weak lyrically and tells a story about Yoshimi's preparation to fight the robots which is almost layed out like the audience is 6 years old. And 5 minutes is too long for such a repetitive song. Part 2 is honestly just quite obnoxious and has an annoying descending bass line - its just not that interesting. In the Morning of the Magicians is one of my favourite songs on this album its very well paced and has a catchy melancholy melody. To be honest the mixing is subpar and it does hinder the listening experience but overall its a 7/10 for me.
