I mean... filled with bangers, obviously. Can't remember having heard any track outside of TS, YYZ, Limelight before, and well... there's some great stuff there too.
Was super into prog rock when younger especially, and just vibes-wise Rush was never quite my favorite -- generally preferred the more folk-y stuff (Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull), and Rush always sounded a bit more... I wanna say glam-rock adjacent. Nonetheless, the songwriting and powerful performances are undeniable.
Obviously heard before, at least half of the tracks or so. Re-listening now, I'm kinda coming around to the fact that it's just not quite my bag. The 80s synth bass is not doing it for me, and the very rhythm focused songs kinda lack in any big, hooky melodies. Most of the melody comes from the vocal delivery, but to tell the truth I've never been a huge fan of MJs voice. I did own the Bad CD way back when, which to my recollection had a sound I liked more. Now, it sounds like I'm totally shitting on this album which is not my intention since it's by all accounts an album with some really absolute classic tracks (hard to deny Beat It and Billie Jean). All in all, some solid stuff here that I'll listen to if it comes on the radio or whatever, but wouldn't seek out myself.
(And Christ, that McCartney collab is rank. Knocks at the very least half a star of my rating)
The title track is great obviously, just an absolute classic. Great vibes all around. Still though, most of the rest of the album kinda feels like background music than something you'd put on to really listen to.
Just great stuff, definitely something I'll come back to. Didn't really think I was into this kind of soul, always thought it a bit too... smooth? Like, disguising raw passion and feeling in overly-sweet dulcet tones. Here I'm really getting some passion though -- love it.
I've only vaguely heard of the band before, and I do remember hearing That Lady somewhere (which, I must say, might be my least favorite track on the record). Songs that particularly stood out for me now in my first 2-3 listens are Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight and You Walk Your Way, but the whole middle of the record is just great.
Multiple solid tracks here, and especially the title track (obviously) is fantastic and just so vivid. These tracks are absolutely not to be ignored but on the whole though, I dunno, it just comes across a bit too milquetoast to grab my attention.
Fantastic stuff. Haven't listened to the whole record before, just the major hits, but this is just great all around. Recording is solid and hits hard, great drum sound. If there's anything that would put me off just slightly, it's the lyrics which come across as kinda crass. But hey, I'll take it.
Damn, this is great. Have only heard Black Hole Sun before, and while I like it, it's nothing that had particulary stood out to me among other grungy tracks from around this time. The band has a way heavier sound than I expected, some tracks are practically straight up metal. Black Hole Sun is even better in the context of the album. Looking forward to giving this further listens, it's a bit too much to fully graps in a single day.
Solid 60s rock sound, some garage rock and psychadelic vibes. Not fully my bag, but I can certainly appreciate it.
Hm. Not my thing. I'll concede that it sounds well-produced and certainly interesting. But this is really one of those genres where I'm not even sure what I'm listening for -- it's not catchy, hooky, nor particularly heavy-hitting or melodic either. Kinda sounds like what you'd hear on the soundtrack if a movie were trying to portray a grungy 90s nightclub.
Have heard the band before and was looking forward to listening to this. But I must say my previous assessment of the band still holds, it just doesn't quite hit the spot for me.
It's a bit hard to put my finger on exactly what doesn't work for me. I think it's partly that it sounds like the sort of music where it'd go into a really punchy and catchy chorus, but it never comes. If it instead is going for a more subdued alternative vibe throughout, it doesn't quite have the quirkyness, the interesting vocal melodies, or the raw emotion which I think such music calls for. Like, I dunno... The Cure perhaps, to take an example of the same era.
I would like to give this a few more listens. I do like the sound generally, so it's a bit disappointing that it just doesn't quite hit for me.
Solid Rolling Stones record, good songs throughout with a few stand-outs. I've never been the biggest fan of the Rolling Stones, but certainly don't dislike em either.
Still a hard hitting record, almost 50 years later. Endless youthful energy, totally understandable how much of a splash it made when it came out. Some great tracks on here.
I mean... just one of the greatest records of all time. And I say that as someone who isn't a classic rock die-hard. Endless creativity, unique compositions that still feel fresh today. Even the sorta goofy tracks are just all-time classics.
