Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Feb 22 2024

Not really my type of music, from a time I don't often listen to. It was enjoyable but a little samemy from song to song. I did like that this was the origin of Pusha Man. I didn't expect to be listening to a Soundtrack for a blacksploitation film on my first day but here we are.

Fun album, I couldn't understand a word but it was a good time basically the whole time.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Feb 24 2024

I'm gonna enjoy this one! Amy Winehouse is a legend in the ska scene and this is her biggest hit before her tragic death in 2011. This is one of the albums I've always told myself I should listen to but never truly brought myself to it. Also interesting to see songs I haven't heard of despite them being her biggest hits. Rehab: Absolute certified banger, you'd be hard pressed not tap your foot along to this jam. You Know I'm No Good: Sounds a lot like a lot of ladies anthem. Amy Winhouse's voice and accompaniment is excellent. Even the break is amazing. Me & Mr Jones: LOVED this one Amy Winhouse belts it and still feels good on every line. Just Friends: A true ska track, two step, steel drums, and the ever present Amy to tie it together better than anyone else could. Back to Back: Never heard this one before despite it being her biggest hit. The Chorus is incredible but the lyrics are a lot darker than I expected. The Eternal struggle of being a mans side piece but not able to pull yourself from that entanglement. I doubt theirs anything deeper there but you could lay this across addiction and it would map easily. Love Is A Losing Game: This song is a lot more understated but holding to the themes of the previous tracks. I really love the full string accompaniment. Tears Dry On Their Own: I start to get the feeling that Amy's song are all in relation to how she feels with a man. Once again a very dark ballad which an incredible chorus.
