The Genius Of Ray Charles
by Ray Charles
Remarkable straightforward big band swing, and some ballads thrown in. Some of the big band cuts have some interesting solos and great composition, though Ray's vocal jazz stylings rarely add to these songs and overall everything feels very safe. The ballads are sweet and everything locks together quite well, though nothing stands out and just passes over me as if nothing at all. The background vocals are a nice addition that do add a slight boost of emotion. Overall this is simple and competent vocal jazz and big band swing that plays it close to the chest, it is enjoyable but nothing shines bright here.
