My main note on this album is the use of multi-instrumentation, it felt like it had all the usual suspects but then featured doubly the number of unexpected instruments (hello, theremin solo?!). I was taken aback by this and felt it was rich in musical depth. This album feels underrated, despite there being two hit songs. It had more emotional depth that I didn't know they had previously, having only heard the top hits. Sloop John B, I know there's an answer, and I just wasn't made for these times were a combination of dark pop, which may have defined this genre before it was a genre, meaning it was made as upbeat music with dark undertones in the lyrics. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of this well developed album. I had no idea the Beach Boys offered more complex themes and rich composition for being California surfer dudes.
