American Gothic by David Ackles
Jul 18 2024

What a nice discovery! It reminds me a lot of Leonard Cohen: the poetic but simple lyrics, the gentle musical arrangements accompanying, and a voice that emerges from a place of truth. “Love’s Enough” is a truly accomplished feat.

Dr. Octagonecologyst by Dr. Octagon

This guy was sent by God Our Lord to redeem us from our sins. I was very aware of “First Come, First Served” - another masterpiece - so huge was my surprise when I found out that they both were the same person. The unexpected sampling, careful arranging, and mad lyricism creates a unique never-boring always-mind-blowing experience. Honestly, wtf. Peace.

Kimono My House by Sparks
Jul 25 2024

This album was not new to me. I first came across Sparks because of the 2021 Leos Carax bizarre baby doll superstar movie. I was mesmerized by the synthetic sound, so I needed to know more about the guys who composed “So May We Start”. After scrolling a bit through the internet, I came across two women wearing kimonos: one looking at something with surprise—maybe even amazement—and the other directly winking at you, as if inviting you to join her. Upon starting the opening song, the frenetic succession of rhinos, elephants, and tacky tigers, and the sound of something flashy as if a character in a B-sci-fi-movie just fired a gun hypnotized me. I found myself wandering around the limits of my room dans la cité universitaire trying to understand the emotions my body was emanating. I was dancing. At this very moment, under the 30-degree heat of a beautiful Marseille, as each song played, I felt like I was meeting an old friend whose existence I had forgotten, but whose mere sight exponentially improved my life.

25 by Adele

I find it fascinating how Adele begins this album. The opening line, "Hello, it's me," the realm of the character in the song and addresses the listener directly: this is Adele, the powerhouse, the voice of heartbreak. Overall, I really enjoyed this album, but I don't see a coherent concept that justifies releasing a whole album instead of just singles. Still, solid.

I Against I by Bad Brains
Aug 01 2024

What a beautiful discovery. When the album started I couldn’t stop thinking how similar it sounded to Nirvana. Reading a little about it, it seems it was greatly influential in the 90s. Weird that I hadn’t listened to this in my 15s when I consider myself a hardcore punker.
