Lust For Life
Iggy Pop
basically just sounds like a bunch of throwaway bowie songs, down to iggy pop's vocal presence sounding like a bowie impression. it's certainly... 70s rock. read a lot of people praising the passenger, which is basically the most boring song. this album is basically like heroes or low but shittier. people compare bowie's collaborations with iggy pop to his collaborations with lou reed, but at least lou has his own voice and identity. the things i've enjoyed about iggy pop's music before (namely his work with the stooges) is the spontaneity of the music, the raw and brutal nature of it all, which this album eschews for dull 70s rock sheen. turn blue starts with an irritating impression of lou reed to add insult to injury. and then he starts making annoying noises. what is this song?! neighborhood threat might be the best song... but again, it's because pop is just doing a fucking david bowie impression!

Music for the Masses
Depeche Mode
pretty fun to get to listen to a depeche mode record after years of only hearing their hits... they're pretty rad, definitely respect the sound, the energy, the gothic synthpop stuff is tight. one of the better sounds to come out of the 80s for sure. some really brain-tingling cuts on here like "never let me down again," "strangelove," "behind the wheel." somewhere in the middle i started to zone out a bit (maybe from "i want you now" to "nothing") but "pimpf" is a really cool and unexpected closer. sounded a bit like boss music in a video game or something. overall, really fun. not going to become my new obsession or anything, but great music nonetheless.

Beck
first song sounds like a ford f150 commercial... that's the only thing i've gleaned from it in its 3:22 runtime. i like that the concept of this album came from beck getting bullied for being white. beck has like two types of songs from what i know about him: "where it's at" style rap rock and generic garage rock (i haven't listened to sea change though so i'm definitely limited in my perspective). okay this third song is just car seat headrest. people compare this record to gorillaz and they're right, thus far it's literally just been the first gorillaz record but worse. i don't think i've heard a song on this album i've actually enjoyed yet (as of "black tambourine"). okay "hell yes" is pretty enjoyable, but it made me realize that the enjoyability of a beck song essentially reliant on being quirky enough to get your attention. which is fine or whatever, but this album seems like a rehash of odelay and mellow gold, so i feel like all of the quirk has been squeezed from this trip-hop, sampledelia gimmick already. as of "go it alone," this album has officially become incredibly boring. also fuck jack white. i just genuinely wonder how someone is supposed to *want* to sit here and listen to this entire album when every fucking song is just a four on the floor dirge with a monotone vocals that sound about as bored with the song as i am. "rental car" is the second song on this entire album that didn't waste any of my time with pure distilled boredom in music form. because things happen in this song. things are happening and it's not just the same 30 seconds looped over and over again. this is how you make music, mr. beck. last song was such a huge waste of time i don't even want to type its name.

Pixies
debaser... debaser... maybe black francis should move a bit closer to the mic. pretty fun though. as of "waves of mutilation" i find myself thinking "oh.... this is what weezer and smashing pumpkins and all of that other stuff is trying to be" but it's a bit less accessible, y'know. sort of esoteric and the melodies don't want to give you peace of mind (which some would call "pop influence"). honestly this is better than i thought it would be. not really much more to say (as of "dead"). i feel like this is just garage rock for people who are like too pretentious to listen to garage rock. like early ty segall but in a studio. it's still good, but i feel like it's so similar and i like the raw garage feel more anyway. overall, pretty fun and fresh record for 1989. good songs, good vibes... but they shoulda played it RAW!!

David Bowie
bowie’s bowie, and his (timely) 77 collab with eno proves to me that post-coke bowie sounds a lot like mid-coke bowie but… ambient? i guess? pretty alright record but not much stood out to me…

this is like if the rolling stones couldn't sing (ie somehow more of a disgrace to the black origins of rock n roll). it's like punk music made exclusively by people who have been kicked in the head by horses

i really like the quirky things this added to the soul genre. some people on here say that the album "isn't their thing..." i'm not sure how that's possible. fun album and probably the best i've heard on here thus far!

Live Through This
Hole
i don't like grunge or riot grrl (the breeders are pretty cool) music so this album was not going to be a fun listen for me. i just looked and i'm only four songs in. how. this is so boring. my biggest takeaway from this record is that there are a bunch of indie bands doing this type of music now but better, with a vaster array of influences and less production-sheen. if you're reading this right now, look up "art school jocks" or "shady bug" or something. some kind of good new band that deserves your attention.
also courtney love's dad was the grateful dead's touring manager and assisted them with trafficking LSD for the CIA.

i mean it's kanye... like... the albums pretty great. good tunes. i sort of dislike this era bc of the amount of producers on a track, everything has this weird shine to it. other than that, fun re-listen
