lush & personal, the combination of several genres with apt, standout guitar work. complete & mostly but not perfectly consistent, a side effect of ambition. a mature understanding of love, but youthful & energetic often. a classic & the blueprint for modern funk in hip-hop & the epitome of neo-soul.
perfectly unremarkable for me. this is the standard of synthpop in its time, but new order trade a certain angst & emotional depth for danceability. with credit, i think they've done so successfully. but it makes me feel as if i wish i hadn't heard joy division before. i can't see past it. sonically low-life is intricate but the vocals could be more polished. the lyrical performances & content have nowhere near enough weight to me. as a standout, sunset is inherently the cure-esque but perfectly unique & unalike at the same time.
