Isaac Hayes' vocals are a stand out but utilized a lot less than I would have expected. Strong opening and closing track.
Overall, a good listen. High points were really high but with some lulls throughout. Have to admit the album ended pretty weakly. I was waiting for another track when nothing came after and just thought, "That's it?"
From what I knew of Frank Zappa I expected this to be a difficult listen. I was surprised with how much I really enjoyed it! Creative and solid energy all throughout.
Great listen.
Definitely not up my alley. Nothing particularly wrong with it but just a style I don't enjoy.
When people talk about a musical experience this is a prime example of that. It can't be listened to in parts. This works best in a single listening session. It's important to separate the connection most people most likely make to The Exorcist, because there is such a stark difference between The Exorcist theme portion and the rest of the piece. If you're able to take the music for what it is it's a really great listen.
Anything interesting happening with the instruments is immediately offset by the terrible vocals.
Very nice voice and great music. Sometimes was a little thrown off with the vocal delivery but it was at least unique.
Felt like an incoherent mish mash of songs just thrown onto a single album. The album didn't flow and most tracks felt like an intro that was building to something and just never went anywhere.
The highs on this album are really high. Unfortunately, most of the album feels forgettable and just okay. Overall it averages out to a bland listen with a few tracks I'll hear in the wild and think "oh yea that's a good song."
