Stankonia by OutKast
Apr 22 2025

This album is super-ambitious and feels really experimental compared to what was happening at the time. The hits still hold up, but overall there could have been more self-editing. It feels a bit long at 1:13 and not all the songs are great. Best song: Ms. Jackson

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Apr 23 2025

Sarah Vaughan has an excellent voice, but this isn’t really my cup of tea. I did enjoy that she improvised a bit and it felt a lot more real than most live albums

Purple Rain by Prince
Apr 24 2025

I understand that most people hate this take, but this has everything I don’t like about 80s music. Weird production, everything is overly dramatized, and image seems more important than substance. Prince is very talented but our tastes don’t have much in common.

Home Is Where The Music Is by Hugh Masekela
Apr 25 2025

Surprised by how much I like this. I’m not usually a huge jazz guy but I can get into this, at least as a background to working. The musicianship is incredible and the songs are improvisational without being too loose. I will probably save this for future listening. Flugelhorn for the win!

Rio by Duran Duran
Apr 26 2025

Sounds okay if you just let it wash over you. Listening to the lyrics isn’t very rewarding. A few decent songs there, but buried under 80s overproduction. I would dance to the hits at a bar.

Moondance by Van Morrison
Apr 27 2025

It’s unfortunate how much I enjoyed this, given that Morrison has gone off the deep end lately. Probably it just means I should seek out some proper soul music. I doubt I’ll come back to this, if only so as not to put money in Morrison’s pockets.
