This album evokes a time, place, and mood. I had left NYC for L.A. and was now listening to PJ singing about my home. I think I listened to the whole thing (it was the Napster days) but I don’t remember some of the whole tracks - but the “hits”, “Good Fortune”, “Hustle” and “Mess” are all-timers and I’ve come back to them over and over through the years. The things in between make it a real document of an ascendant, pre-9/11 NYC that was fully out of its late 20h Century malaise, but not yet a luxury product when being on a rooftop in Brooklyn in the middle of the night meant something different than both today and 10 years earlier. The last track “We Float” reminds me of something that would’ve fit very nicely on Zooropa. Perhaps this record is “New Yoropa”? A snapshot of a changing place that will shortly transform in ways inconceivable at the time.
