Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson
Jun 04 2025

Pleasant and easy to listen to, with nice instrumentation + vocal + harmonies. The album is varied enough that it doesn't get too boring, but individually the songs can be a bit repetitive. Decent 70s bluesy soft rock/ballads. Reminiscent of Bread, the Who, and the Beatles on some tracks (a few goofy romping Paul-esque tunes). I preferred the softer songs with grand instrumentation, like the ballad "Without You", and the classical "I'll Never Leave You", as well as the more understated "The Moonbeam Song". "Coconut" was... interesting.

Bad by Michael Jackson

Very slick, catchy, and polished, and lots of hits to show for it. It's very produced, and while busy, everything seems very intentional. The instrumentation does suffer at times from feeling incredibly dated, and is sometimes a bit much. The sound of the album is distinct, which can sometimes lead to blurring between the more forgettable filler tracks; still, with a few slower songs, like the seductive 'Liberian Girl' and the soulful 'Man in the Mirror', or even the darker, rockier 'Dirty Diana', there’s some nice variation. Great pop album, with some funk and soul influences. 'Smooth Criminal' is the album at its best: Catchy, sharp, and perfectly produced, with great vocals.

Is This It by The Strokes

Clearly a very influential album on the world of indie rock. It's minimalist and tight, with simple and effective instrumentation. Fun basslines, catchy guitar riffs, upbeat and basic drums. The vocals have an interesting distortion effect, and the album has a nostalgic feel to it; helped by the lyrics dealing with young adult life, love, and angst. All of the songs are catchy and concise and pleasant to listen to; it's quite repetitive, but since I like the sound of it, and it isn't too long, I enjoy its distinct style. My favourite track varies, but right now, it might be 'Last Nite'.
