1001 Albums Summary

Quite good. Nearly gave it a 4. Sound that is paradoxically generic and hard to compare to anything else. Very much informed by alternative rock of the 90/especially 2000s, lots of strings in the background and some horns every once in a while. Alex turner vocals but not AM sound. Lyrics lack ‘depth’ as I would define it but aren’t bad at all.

Honestly felt like a grind to get through. Obviously technically impressive and with a massive influence, but I’m just not cool enough to like jazz. Nearly gave up after Spanish keys, but the last 3 or 4 tracks were so much better than the first 3. 2 stars because it’s not bad to listen to while working and because it’s far from offensive to the ear - I just can’t imagine I’ll be coming back to it often. Highlights were John McLaughlin and Miles Runs the Voodoo Down.

It was fine. Wasn’t crazy about the sound, I can tell the lyrics are likely quite good but I couldn’t properly appreciate them with one listen. Therefore a 3 feels the most fitting based on first impression. Message in a bottle and walking on the moon are obviously quite good. Vocals got annoying

All love ballads, no lyrical 'depth' to be found. However, I think this is just about as palatable as music can possible be for me. Giving it a four, I've been back already and I'm confident I'll be back in the future. I love you so much it hurts, half as much, and you don't know me are highlights.

Can definitely tell there's something to these lyrics. Superficially, pondering our own mortality and some degree of nihilism comes through - but I can't properly appreciate the message of this album through 1.5 listens. The sound is not for me, not much at all. Maybe on the fifth listen I'd love this album, but for now I think I kind of have to leave it at a 2. Would be a 2.5 if I could. Title track isn't necessarily my favorite, but was certainly one that stood out on an album I couldn't seem to pay attention to for more than a few minutes.

The stones are the stones. Some very sonically pleasing songs on here, and sympathy for the devil is obviously just insane. I get that it’s kind of their whole brand, but I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Mick Jagger’s caricaturishly-southern American performance over this long of a period. It starts to feel slightly ridiculous, and I get distracted. Giving it a 3, would be a 3.5 if I could.

Unmistakeable 80s aesthetic that I sort of have a natural aversion to but which is growing on me lately. The lyrics are very explicitly and plainly stated, which is simultaneously charming and sort of ugly. I’m not sure, I’d give it a 3 solidly. I think underwear and the penultimate track are the highlights.
