Step In The Arena by Gang Starr
Aug 24 2025

Sounds very 90s, kind of cheesy but mostly fun. Seems like just mostly focused on lots of rhymes in the lyrics and talks about rap a lot (basically lyrics are irrelevant), voice is pretty good. Music is jazzy with lots of dj record scratching and samples and such. Not enough variety although it generally sounds good and catchy

Imagine by John Lennon
Aug 26 2025

Not nearly as good as most of his stuff with he Beatles. It's kind of an awkward mix between him trying to be very sincere and emotional/virtuous/political and hating Paul McCartney. He takes himself way too seriously and seems to have very little interest in experimenting musically, it's mostly just piano ballads and fairly basic rock n roll type stuff. The music is decent but kind of "dry", I'm more interested in it as a concept and history than actually enjoying listening to it, although it's still mostly enjoyable: 3.5 stars

Catch A Fire by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Aug 27 2025

It's a little rockier than I would expect from Bob Marley, but still has a very reggae sound. Some of its lyrics are very protesty and political. Most of the songs are very repetitive and also there isn't a tonne of variety between them, however it still sounds very good and very tropical and happy/chill - despite the lyrics. It has some really good guitar solos (especially Stir It Up) that are a bit unexpected to me but I love. Not my favourite thing ever (I liked exodus more) but it's good. 4 stars.

Back At The Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith
Aug 28 2025

I'm not really a jazz fan so it's hard to rate it and I don't have much to compare it to. It sounds nice but doesn't do much for me beyond being good background music. I don't see anything that makes it remarkable or distinct from other jazz I've heard before, other than having lots of organ, but that's probably more my fault than the album's. It's not really meant for me (not into jazz) and I don't really get it, but this certainly not bad. 3 stars.

Lady Soul by Aretha Franklin
Aug 31 2025

It's great, I get why they call it soul. There's just something so uplifting about it and it hits hard even though it's much less of an "artsy" songwriter type album than most of my favourites. The singing sounds great and so do the instrumentals, love all the brass. 4.25 stars
