Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Sep 23 2025

Album released in 1968. Band mostly formed in San Francisco, with the addition of Janis Joplin who came to North California from Texas. The other members of the band were Peter Albin, a guitarist with a background in folk and blues, Sam Andrew, another guitarist with a background in rock, classical and jazz and another guitarist called James Gurley. The band were not initially blown away by Janis Joplins vocals when she first joined but decided to take her on anyway, and clearly it obviously went well. In terms of the album, I don’t know I think I need to give it way more of a listen. Obviously I can appreciate musically they are very talented but maybe not quite for me? I did like Oh, sweet Mary and ball and chain on the first listen though.
