I’ve always loved Nirvana, but In Utero isn’t the album I go back to most often. There’s no denying its importance as a cultural moment in the grunge era but as a studio record, it only has a handful of truly great songs for me. I generally prefer the live versions of these songs on From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, which feel rawer and more immediate, which is Nirvana is at its best. That said, I can’t imagine the pressure the band was under making a follow-up to Nevermind. Were they just a one-hit wonder? Or would they create a record that went to the next level and cemented them as superstars who shaped the culture? Did they even want any of that? Or did they want to reject that pressure and stay outsiders? Those questions alone could weigh heavily on any artist, but when you add in Kurt Cobain’s struggles with addiction and mental health, you can imagine the tension behind making In Utero.
