The album is well presented and, for those who appreciate songwriter lyrics, storytelling, poetry, and folk music, with a touch of melancholy and nostalgia for experiences never actually lived, this is a high-quality work. The music is original within its genre, and the storytelling is strong. Sadly, Bob Dylan’s music, to my ears, resembles the drunken cries of a hillbilly abandoned by his wife. This album evokes a nostalgia for experiences that were never had and a melancholy that one should not wish to embrace. I would not listen to this album for leisure, only out of interest in its musical relevance. If the intent was to turn self-pity into art, the album clearly achieves what it sets out to do. But this is what makes it, for me, unpleasant to hear. For those who enjoy the genre, it may well merit a 5 out of 5, as it achieves what the but I struggle to see how it can appeal to anyone beyond Dylan’s fans. Therefore, despite its artistic merit, the most generous rating I can give this work is 2 out of 5.
