1001 Albums Summary

How much should I hold Bob's singing against him? I've hated Bob's music my whole life but I mostly hate everyone's singing. How much should I hold Bob's harmonica playing against him? It's not his fault he's not Junior Wells. How much should I hold Bob's lyrics against him? As I told a bandmate a few years ago (actually probably on the occasion of Bob's Pulitzer prize win) if you like words, read a book. How much should I hold Bob's fans against him? It doesn't seem he likes them very much either. I liked "She Belongs to Me" the most, probably because I can't remember hearing it before. SH Blues is a strong opener. Too many good covers of Maggie's Farm for me to want to throw that baby out with the bathwater. I'd be fine with deleting Mr. Tambourine Man from the universe.

1st NY & CH record I got, ca. 1996? Probably from the Guitar Player (maybe Guitar for the Practicing Musician? no, because I think it was a 30th Anniversary issue) magazine recommendation? I still can't get enough of the Down By The River solo, an absolute electric guitar all-timer. Not my favorite NY & CH album, but was much easier to come by than Time Fades Away, On the Beach or Tonight's The Night way back in the 20th C. I don't like any of the ballads on Everybody Knows... as much as the title track of On the Beach, but that's not to say Running Dry is a bad song.

When you don't like a band, or even a whole genre of music, one of the initial responses can be "this all sounds the same". My dad has written off James Brown's post-1968 Live at the Apollo Vol. 2 career thusly. Anyway, this whole album sounds the same. Not for me, but not as "not for me" as the Boss or something. Oh dip, how many Springsteen albums are going to be part of this 1001? I bet there are going to be more Springsteen albums than Grant Green albums. OK I'm giving myself this out, now that I realize I've hypothetically got 998 days to go. When the second Springsteen album comes up before a single Grant Green album, I'm out. Is this list 1001 different artists? I am almost excited to find out and will avoid doing any research.
