1001 Albums Summary

Great to hear this after so many years. One of the first albums I ever listened to. I learned the riff for Paranoid when I was 14. Still sounds good to this day.

I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin especially II III and of course IV, but I always felt that IV was the peak and marked a musical high point specially for Plant as a vocalist. However it’s amazing to listen to this album as I’m less familiar with it (apart from the obvious tunes). It sounds really great to me in 2025 and Plant clearly still had it! However I still feel these later albums don’t quite have the muscle and freshness of the earlier ones. This would have made a much better single disc rather than a double album. So happy to hear them again though!

Such great memories. Amazing band at the height of their powers with lovely Rickenbacker driven pop. Some great songs - and a few forgivable fillers.

Of course I completely understand how seminal this album is in the pantheon of modern music - but sadly too many decades of water under the bridge for me to be lost in the music of disaffected youth. I’ve always loved Peter Hook’s playing and the overall sound of a band who can’t play particularly well yet play with such commitment I also really love. Can’t give it more than 3 stars though. If I had grown up with it, I’d probably give it 5.

It’s crazy listening to this as a 59 year old - JP were one of my favourite bands as a teenager. This album sounds surprisingly good all these years later. In my head I had relegated Judas Priest with Saxon, Tygers of Pang Tang etc to the lower leagues or ‘Spinal Tap’ end of heavy rock -keeping Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Rush in the Premier League. But I was wrong. Yes the lyrics are a bit cringy, and Rob Halfords forced vocal style can grate a bit - but blimey there are some really great riffs and songs on here. I want to give it 4 stars but I’m removing a star to allow for my rose tinted nostalgic spectacles. Really enjoyed listening and would have probably died without ever hearing it again were it not for 1001 albums. Hooray!

Apart from the obvious well known tunes, Lennon’s solo material has always left me a little underwhelmed. Can’t help the comparison with Maccas amazing output from the same period. This was released the same year as Ram and is definitely in its shadow. Some classic songs but not a classic album imo
