1001 Albums Summary

This is an amazing album. While it doesn't do much to push into unexplored or experimental territories, it is a distillation of the absolute best of a certain vein of music that was still actively evolving during the sixties. A perfect instrumental backdrop to one of the best vocal performers (and performances) of all time. Incredible.

Yeah. It's Kind Of Blue. The best jazz players of the time came together and made one of the best jazz albums of all time. Modal jazz. It's all that. Blue In Green remains one of my favorite songs ever.

BB King is very good at guitar. He is also a great stage presence. Contrary to the announcement at the beginning of this album, he is only a passable blues singer, and frankly after listening to Aretha so recently it feels almost openly misogynistic to put their talents in the same ballpark. He could play guitar, and he did that, honestly not much else going on worth writing about in this album. It's good guitar blues, that's all.

I'll admit, I'm still mad at Beck for what he did to Cage the Elephant. But honestly this album feels like the transitionary point from older, experimental Beck into his newer, more self indulgent paradigm. I can hear a lot of things i like, he is a talented an interesting composer. Lyrically i found this album rarely, although not never, rising above forgettable. I am not a fan of Beck's ballads, of which there are several on this album. Not my favorite, even among Beck's catalog.
