A collection of musings on black womanhood, love, religion, hard lessons learned, the music industry, and new motherhood. The easy, genre-blending production has aged like fine wine. I can hear Ms. Lauryn’s influence on Amy Winehouse, Nelly Furtado, Solange, and countless other artists. Her vocals are as impressive as I thought they would be and then some. My only real complaint is about the spoken segments: I know why they are present thematically, but I have no patience for them, and wish they were separate tracks instead of at the end of certain songs. Also, there are some lyrics that dip into a territory that could be described as preachy, sanctimonious, or “of their time.” But, like, that’s a nitpick, and I respect Ms. Lauryn Hill more than I care about that. This album is a classic for a reason. Everyone should listen to it. 4.5/5 stars.
