1001 Albums Summary

Solid debut from a young and talented group. Goldwasser and Van Wyngarden demonstrate clear knowledge of past musical genres such as psychedelia and electronica while being creative enough to add their style and voice. The first half of the album contained many memorable songs such as "Kids" that brilliantly captured youthful innocence combined with the bitter sweetness of having to grow up anf become an adult. The second half was clearly inspired by the Beatles and Pink Floyd, with riffs like Harrison on guitar, and innovations that paid homage to greats. 3.5/5

5/5. Nilsson combines incredible dexterity in genre, with a sophisticated and often subtle vocal performance that is worthy of being remembered. From the opening chords of "Gotta get up", to the Calypso feel of "Coconut", to the driving rock of Jump in the Fire", to the soft coos of "I'll never Leave you" and "the Moonbeam Song", Nilsson demands our attention, as he takes us on a journey of classic 1940s blues hits to Nilsson's own (and at times oddly brilliant) creations. If you have not listened to this album, you are missing out.
