1001 Albums Summary

Finally listened at a coffee shop and this was a very interesting yet charming album! I liked how accessible yet progressive all of the songs were but all in all it very much felt like background music, one of the best examples of background music though!

ps i've listened to this album before and it's one of my most streamed ever Wait people are saying Lorde is bringing back "Melodrama" for her next album???? ...HELL YES!! "Melodrama" is a very vulnerable and personal project from Lorde, but on top of that, it is also extremely creative both musically and stylistically and takes a lot of risks compared to her top-charting tracks (no hate tho, they're great). We have catchy and infectious hooks but also introspective, gorgeous acoustic piano ballads, something Lorde didn't really dabble much in before. "The Louvre" as an example opens up strangely with an acoustic guitar before building up to a melodic chorus, then suddenly turns into Lorde repeating "Broadcast the boom, boom, boom, boom and make 'em all dance to it" plenty of times. In theory, the latter is also a really interesting line; not a lot of people truly listen to the lyrics of charting artists and Lorde's success in the music industry may have further proved that. While she was writing very personal lyrics, no one really cared, and simply danced. That further proves that this record specifically was a stylistic risk in Lorde's creative process. I have a lot of favorite tracks on this LP... I may like the entire thing as a whole BUT it's just not a perfect one to me. The production here is really great combined with Lorde's beautiful vocals and personal writing. We also see her making reprises and sequels to tracks, such as "Liability" and "Sober", and "Liability (Reprise)" has actually become one of my favorite songs... ever recently, for some reason. Also, let me just take a moment to speak on the strange but pleasant musical choices... The strange metal grating sound in "Hard Feelings/Loveless", a trap beat in the same song, these piano ballads, like oh my god... quite a lot more unexpected stuff ngl. Not doing a full on analysis right now as much as I'd want to but... yeah. I don't see how anyone couldn't like this honestly. It's pretty accessible both to the radio and to patient listeners and it's a pretty unique record. FAV: Green Light, Sober, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Sober II (Melodrama), Writer In the Dark, Supercut, Liability (Reprise), Perfect Places LEAST FAV: not really any........ 11 tracks done concisely and cohesively well 😅
