1001 Albums Summary

Most of the album felt like beautifully made background music—pleasant while it was playing, but difficult to remember once it was over. The lyrics also didn't resonate with me. Many of the songs felt abstract, and even after three complete listens, I struggled to connect with what Simon was trying to communicate. The folk sound was pleasant but rarely memorable, and aside from "A Hazy Shade of Winter," very little stayed with me after the album ended. I only saved one of the twelve tracks, and I don't see myself returning to the album. It's a respected classic, but not one that speaks to my tastes. 2/5

I honestly had a blast with this album. The harmonies, organs, and melodies are just so catchy, and I loved how so many of these breezy pop songs had lyrics that were way darker than they sounded. "Time of the Season" is still a great song, but it feels like it wandered in from another album, and while "I Want Her, She Wants Me" and "Butcher's Tale" didn't quite work for me, there honestly isn't a song here that I hated, just a really fun, concise album that I wish had gotten more love when it first came out. 4/5.

I decided to do the 1001 Albums challenge because I heard Kid A and thought, what else have I been missing? This album feels like the perfect example of “less is more”—I have no idea what half the lyrics are supposed to mean (and I’m not convinced anyone else does either), but somehow that barely matters because the atmosphere does all the heavy lifting. From the eerie opening of “Everything in Its Right Place” to the haunting beauty of “Kid A,” and especially “Idioteque,” which is honestly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, the production creates this unsettling feeling of discovering yourself for the first time; it definitely feels like an album you’ll either completely fall in love with or just never click with, and for me it absolutely worked, with “Motion Picture Soundtrack” providing an emotional finale before the brief, haunting “Untitled” epilogue. 4/5.

I might be doing Celebrity Skin a bit of a disservice by listening to it immediately after Kid A. Going from one of the most experimental and groundbreaking albums I've heard to something that feels like a precursor to the polished power-pop and alternative rock of the mid-2000s makes this record feel a little safe. There are some solid riffs throughout, and "Malibu" is easily the standout for me, but it's hard when the first five seconds of the title track are the most exciting part of the whole album and the rest never quite reaches that same energy. Overall, it wasn't a bad listen—it was just a pretty forgettable one.
