Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman

Wow, I knew fast car and the chorus of talking about a revolution but oh my god, the raw emotion, the obvious obvious huge insane parts of the world and the pain about them just laid out in such a way Her voice is just idk even the words but it feels like a miracle of nature? Is that an exaggeration? I feel so grateful to have given myself the time to sit with this one, knowing she wrote it at uni, it reminded me of my passionate and hopeful and intense feelings about the state of the world and inequality and violence and reminded me of that part of myself that really believed things could be different The stand out song was Behind the Wall, weirdly I’d heard ‘another sleepless night’ sampled in another song I need to find that, but it simultaneously filled me with grief and hope, but the pain of feeling so stuck to help people in their home and the craziness But the full body goosebumps and tears And the it won’t do no good to call It just resonates so much With helplessness of trying to support people to be safe and the idea there’s a system and structures in place agreed by society to help take care of people bit really, those structures are so flawed and not often helpful (even like stuff I do) then also the frustration with the lack of expectations on each other (mainly men) to not be violent Idk maybe some intergenerational stuff as well but wow So glad I started this process, album number 1!

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen

Oooooo had some preconceived notions going into this one, weirdly the most popular song badlands I didn’t resonate with? But made me think about how sometimes it’s hard to listen to masculine music? And wondered about all the women that have to pay the price for men’s desires? But also so aware this is interestingly critical take on it Think it’s cause I don’t love the song to listen to I like the passion But also women as victims of men’s desires to be badmans then the next verse they’re the redemption ??? But the whole albums made sense to me and I could feel the longing for something better in it And the grief and pain, especially in the song factory I liked how he laid it all out there, I think I felt scared of some of what he laid out ???????? Interesting I really liked racing in the street it felt like it tapped into some desire to all come together for some excitement and joy and get out of our boring little houses we have to politely sit in in order to not make a fuss, I liked it as a story of America by a white man that I could feel vulnerability and realness in, and very cool voice, but maybe my cultural references but stop me being able to shake the cringe of this era of rock off ?? Fun to listen to something new

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground

Okay so this one hit me soooooo hard as a teenager but this time idk it didn’t grab me? I love I’ll be your mirror so much, Sunday Morning is cute and nostalgic Maybe again I like the ones that a woman sings hahaha But it’s a really intimate painting of such a specific time of pain and hedonism and drugs, like these people were the baby boomers right, 20 in 1967, born just after world war 2, so much pain and confusion Also interesting that Nico is German I wonder about the trauma in this music and if it resonated with me so much as a child trying to understand my own experiences, now as an adult I can see that these songs are about the pain of people who are in the throes of their trauma and suffering, and maybe that’s not where I am anymore But I do love the guitar and piano, like the songs feel so enveloping, making me feel like I’m swimming or running along or being pulled in, sort of like you’re high

okay I feel like I need to reclaim the word funky……. Fucking he’ll makes me want to move Loved understanding the time it was made and importance of the songs Don’t call me n***** whitey is inspired, I can imagine in that time it was really important I want to take you higher is a fucking banger the high note at the end I want to listen to these when I have time to mooooooooove But also then you get a lovely funny little folky song with the vibes of love and peace Such a good feeling it album feel like it’s proper tapped into subconscious ???????? And drugs letting you get there but also protecting you from it The fact these people were born in 1944 Swear to god we going backwards
