At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters
Jul 30 2026

To know the history behind this album and its influence on rock n' roll is truly inspiring. 5 STARS Tracklist: A1 - I Got My Brand On You A2 - I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man A3 - Baby Please Don't Go A4 - Soon Forgotten A5 - Tiger In Your Tank A6 - I Fell So Good B1 - I've Got My Mojo Working B2 - I've Got My Mojo Working Pt2 B3 - Goodbye Newport Blues Total runtime 35:01 Credits: Bass - Andrew Stephenson Drums - Francis Clay Guitar - Pat Hare Harmonica - James Cotton Liner Notes - Jack Tracy Piano - Otis Spann Vocals - Otis Spann (Tracks: B3) Vocals, Guitar - Muddy Waters Notes: Recorded July 3, 1960 Performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, RI Released by Chess Records in November 1960, At Newport 1960 is widely considered the very first live blues album ever. The afternoon performance on Sunday, July 3, 1960, almost never happened. The night before, thousands of frustrated fans who could not buy tickets rioted outside Freebody Park. The National Guard was called in to restore order, and the city council immediately moved to cancel the rest of the festival. Concert promoter George Wein successfully convinced city officials to let the Sunday afternoon blues session proceed, primarily because the United States Information Agency was actively filming the event to broadcast American culture overseas. Because of the chaos, Muddy Waters and his band ultimately closed out the entire festival. Exhausted after an energetic, show-stopping performance of "Got My Mojo Working," Waters handed the microphone to pianist Otis Spann to close the night. Spann sang "Goodbye Newport Blues," a song Hughes had hurriedly scribbled on the back of a Western Union telegram envelope after hearing about the riots. The raw, overdriven guitar work of Pat Hare and the rhythm section's heavy groove served as a foundational blueprint for the 1960s British Blues Boom. Bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix heavily studied this exact performance to shape their hard rock sounds. Rolling Stone magazine later cemented its legacy by placing it on their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Jul 31 2026

Tracklist: A1 - Bookends Theme (Instrumental introduction) A2 - Save the Life of My Child A3 - America A4 - Overs A5 - Voices of Old People (A sound collage of audio field recordings from retirement homes created by Art Garfunkel) A6 - Old Friends A7 - Bookends Theme (Vocal reprise) B1 - Fakin' It B2 - Punky's Dilemma B3 - Mrs. Robinson (The massive #1 hit single from The Graduate soundtrack) B4 - A Hazy Shade of Winter B5 - At the Zoo Bookends is considered a landmark masterpiece because it captured both the peak of Simon & Garfunkel’s artistic collaboration and the turbulent sociological landscape of late-1960s America. The record is famously structured as a concept album on Side One, exploring a lifecycle journey from childhood to old age. Side Two consists largely of individual tracks, including songs initially intended for or used in Mike Nichols' classic 1967 film, The Graduate. Produced by Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, and Roy Halee, the album hit No. 1 on both the US Billboard Pop Albums chart and the UK charts. It is widely considered one of the duo's definitive masterpieces, showcasing intricate acoustic fingerpicking, complex vocal harmonies, and ambitious studio experimentation. Though it was entertaining, it is really not my cup of tea.
