1001 Albums Summary

Jarring vocal tone and songwriting but Dylan manages to mesh it all together with a casual, smooth ensemble. First time listening to a full Bob Dylan project and feeling quite underwhelmed with the lack of progression or dynamics throughout. The imagery and subject matter is vivid and memorable, although lacking much of an anchor point thematically. "Outlaw Blues" is a more classic rock and roll sound, definitely a highlight of the first half for it's energy alone. A nice change of pace as slow Dylan can get repetitive at times. "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" is another enjoyable track, pretty straight forward song. "Mr. Tambourine Man" is of course a classic and I do enjoy this one very much. Very catchy track, instrumentation is laid back but keeps up a strong movement throughout. Latter half of the album is much stronger. Track 10 and 11 wound up being my favourites as Dylan truly dials in on clear, emotional storytelling. Maybe I wasn't deeply enough engaged before I first hit play on this album, but the final few tracks really pulled me emotionally, and I found the guitar and harmonica to grow smoother and captivating as the album closed. Despite the first few tracks feeling much more repetitive to me, the final 5 songs average double the runtime while keeping me increasingly more hooked throughout. Favorite: It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) Overall this style has never been much my thing, but Dylan does have a good creative energy throughout and his voice is not nearly as grating to me as others like to describe. The last few songs have made me a Bob Dylan fan though.
