New album A solid album held back by inconsistent vocal performances. I had already listened to The Soft Bulletin and I loved it a lot, but it lost some of its appeal over the years because I found the singing subpar. Listening to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, I feel relatively similar. The instrumentals are great, especially the downtempo/trip hop inspired drums, but the vocals could definitely be a lot better. I can forgive the vocal performance for the most part and still appreciate the songs for what they are on the catchier and more immediate tracks, such as Fight Test and the first part of the title track (the second part is also banging!), but the slower tracks that place more emphasis on his singing just don't do it for me, which is pretty much the rest of the album. I actually found this album to be rather front-loaded, with Do You Realize?? being one of the only tracks from the second half I can see myself coming back to. Also, I noticed most of the song transitions were unfortunately pretty janky, which might have just been Spotify's fault. Even if it didn't fully click with me, there's still plenty here to appreciate, and I can definitely see why so many people love this album!
