poems with a melody. refreshing to hear focus on lyrics/voice. backing is soothing, satisfying in its completeness but not so calm/minimal as to be boring. overall fewer layers than i’m used to, more simplistic which allows greater focus and intricacy in each compartment. often not catchy, but i don’t think it’s often trying to be. pleasing variety of sounds+slight variations in genre type, really rewards listening in continual album order. growing on me with repeat listens, as is natural. fun to hear a song i know well (“Superstition”, played in big band) and better understand the context in which it was born. listened to this on the train to cambridge after reading some of 1984, and was shook to hear “Big Brother.” trying to avoiding cultural bias in my rating.
