I remember liking this album alright when it was new, but it hasn't held up in general. There's some fun tracks like Get On Top, but all the lyrics are way more sleazy than I remembered. My wife gives this a 1/5. I'm a little more forgiving. 2/5
I was into Blood Sugar Sex Magic for a bit as a teenager, but overall the Chili Peppers don't do much for me. I recognize all of the singles from Californication, they're just ok, and the rest of the album is kind of the same. 2.5/3
I have much more nostalgia for BSSM and One Hot Minute than Californication, where only the hits really stand out to me. And the album is frontloaded with the singles, so that’s not a great look. The band’s funky roots do show up more profoundly later, which is good, but there’s still too much midtempo fluff to really appreciate, which is not. Eh, a C
