A Night At The Opera
Queen

I am not a Queen fan! I generally pretentious and overwrought. I had Queen II earlier and it did nothing to dispell my pre conceptions. Now this is their best known album and I do confess to a certain fi ding a certain charm to Behemian Rhapsody, probably more to do with its ubiquitous presence in modern popular culture. I guess it wore me down. I'm also anxious to hear I'm in Love With My Car after Mine Myers performance in the movie. It's a nice song. I also didn't realize that You're My Best Friend is also on this album...I like its straight ahead pop song aesthetic, but these guys can't help themselves even on a "pop" song ad the drums and bass are overwrought instead of being simple and in service of a beautiful melody. The next song '39 has a charming folk feel but again is done in by an over produced and somewhat weak chorus. Still I like the song. For the rest of the album it goes from songs that are over produced an over wrought to parody songs (Seaside Rendezvous). Overall it's a better album than Queen II but still filled with Queen's portentious theatricality (The Prophet's Son, Love of my Life.... Yech!) 2.5 stars
