It’s kinda like Hendrix’s “white album” in my opinion way too overblown but still has some of his best tracks as you dig deep… At the start of the album you get an instrumental track then two mini tracks that are entertaining but largely unsatisfying then voodoo chille comes on it’s dirty, messy, and very overblown but an amazing song none the less and from a guitarist perspective the playing on this track is godly! The next track Little Miss strange is also fairly notable as like she’s so fine on axis bold is love it’s a more Beatles esque track written by bass player Noel Redding ( Little miss strange is much cooler than she’s so fine though because the guitars are so dirty). Following that track is long hot summer night a track (where like have you ever been to electric ladyland and crosstown traffic) is a song that is satisfying on the listen but not one that I would point out and say it’s a banger. Come on is full on bluesy madness really enjoyable and great guitar work but it’s a cover track and does an album this long need a cover? Gypsy eyes unfortunately comes across as filler to my ears but hey not dreadful. Burning of the midnight lamp is arguably one of the most unique tracks that he had ever written absolutely loved this one. Side three all kinda revolves around the 13 minute opus 1983 with the track before and after being like slightly different intro’s and outro’s. 1983 though is epic I could tell I would love this after the first minute or so the track sounds so grand and epic almost like a climax point for the album and it’s one if like 3 songs over 6 minutes that I don’t feel overstay it’s welcome. The final side seems to go for a no bullshit approach to the tracks still raining still dreaming is one of those perfect displays of Hendrix’s guitar playing skills. House of fire is a continuous decent into chaos as a military march style verse evolves into Hendrixy craziness. All along the watchtower is absolutely amazing certainty proof that Bob Dylan’s music is always 100x better when someone does their own rendition of it. Voodoo child (slight return) is the condensed version of voodoo chille and is probably the better version in my opinion, an amazing way to close a great album. It’s good the highs are his best ever and the lows are still good 5/5 because I’ll feel bad as I gave axis a 5 so this probably deserves about the same score.
